【Yokai & Mystery】 "The monster cat" of Yusa Bishamondo (Niigata pref.)

I didn't even realize it was a cat mask until I saw the words "Urasa Bi Cat Mask" written on it.
By the way, I wondered why they would bother displaying and selling such an "unattractive mask" and a "cat mask that doesn't look like a cat at all," so I asked the shopkeeper, and to my surprise, they said it was a "traditional amulet for warding off evil spirits from this region."' Long ago, a blind masseur named Mokuichi was called upon by a monk named Chinnen to give him a shoulder massage. Mokuichi was startled when he noticed Chinnen's skeletal structure was different from a human's and tried to run away.

Chinnen threatened Mokuichi, saying, "I am a monstrous cat living in the mountains behind the house. If you tell anyone about this, I will devour you!"

However, Mokuichi, fearing that the villagers would be attacked by this monstrous cat, told his family about it. At that moment, Mokuichi died.

Upon hearing this story, the villagers searched the mountains behind the house in search of the monstrous cat, but they could not find it.

Afterward, the villagers gathered at the Bishamondo temple and, together, raised their voices to express their determination to defeat the monstrous cat.

In fact, the "monster cat" had been hiding in the attic of the Bishamondo temple. Startled by the villagers' loud noises, the monster cat fell from the attic. The villagers then all trampled on the fallen monster cat, killing it.

This incident occurred on March 3rd, and since then, in this area (Yusa), it has become customary for young men to gather naked at the Bishamondo temple on the night of March 3rd, pushing and shoving while shouting.
