yYokai & Mysteryz@ The monk of Takuzousu shrine. is a wite fox (Tokyo pref.)
During the Genna era (1615-1624), there was a young monk named Takuzou who trained at Dentsu-in Temple. According to one account, he acquired an eleven-faced Kannon statue that was unearthed during the construction of Chiyoda Castle (later Edo Castle), and through his training with it, he gained the supernatural power of shapeshifting.

Well, I suppose this just shows he was an amazing monk, judging by the anecdotes that have been passed down about him. But there's even a story that Takuzou was actually a white fox in disguise! I went to the shrine dedicated to this Takuzou.

There seem to be several theories about how Sawazouji's true identity as a white fox was revealed.
In the "official history" of Sawazouji Inari, it states that "when he had finished his training, he appeared in the head of the academy's dream and revealed that he was Inari Daimyojin, whom Ota Dokan had invited, and that he had attained the 'Dharma of the Pure Land' that he had long desired. He left with the words, 'I will protect this temple, so build a shrine and enshrine me,'"
As a more humorous anecdote, it is said that "he accidentally had his tail sticking out while sleeping, which was seen by a colleague, and he became embarrassed and left." This shows a playful side to the monk who was called a genius, and I personally prefer this version.

This is a hackberry tree nearby, said to be the home of a white fox that transformed into Sawazouji.
The upper half of the tree was burned during wartime, and there's a legend that two ward office employees who tried to cut it down later met their untimely deaths.
However, the question remains: "Would Inari Daimyojin, who studied the teachings of Pure Land Buddhism, really kill ward office employees?"
Takuzousu 'd been a regular at "Inari Soba Mansho," a soba restaurant that still exists today.
And when they later looked into the money he paid, it turned out to be "fallen leaves"!
When they actually asked the restaurant staff, the response was, "Well, I wonder..." lol
